Learn More About Our Veterinary Technicians and Assistants!
At North Cascade Veterinary Hospital, our veterinary technicians are educated in the care and handling of animals and in many laboratory and clinical procedures.
Head Technician, Supervisor
Melissa (Mel) is our head tech and supervisor of the doctors’ assistants and kennel staff. She has been a dedicated member of our team for over 16 years and helped put together and train our team of devoted assistants and kennel staff.
Among her many duties, Mel also oversees patient medical care, prepares and recovers surgical patients, performs most of our dental cleanings
and lends educational support to our staff and clients.
Mel attended the WSU, studying Zoology. She also studied additional tech courses at the Cedar Valley College. She became a registered veterinary technician in 2002. She has worked in the veterinary field for over 30 years, specializing in small animal care. Her volunteer experience includes the Woodland Park Zoo, the AFLAR Animal Rescue and the Crista Nursing Home.
In her spare time, Mel enjoys raising and showing Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. Her animal menagerie also includes 5 rescued cats, 6 dogs, a 40 lb tortoise, Arabian horse, chickens, cockatoo and her latest rescue, a young Molly mule saved from Yakima Feed Lot. She has spent her life dedicated to helping animals and looks forward to many more years of serving the needs of our furry friends.
Alissa began her journey at North Cascade Veterinary Hospital in March 2011. Her first post was as a receptionist, but as her interests and talents shined, she quickly transitioned to working with pets and clients as a doctor’s assistant.
She's a graduate of the Bellingham Technical College and to grow even further, she's currently attending school to acquire her veterinary technician’s license. She got married in 2009 and lives with her husband, 2 dogs and 1 cat. Alissa is our DIE HARD Seahawks fan and supporter (as you can tell by the photo)! She also loves being outdoors and enjoys camping and hiking.
Shelby joined the team in May 2010. She began as a part of the kennel assistant team and quickly excelled and surpassed all expectations. She's the one that always makes us smile, laugh and feel better when we're down. She really became a favorite among staff and clients alike! Shelby worked hard and trained even harder; working hand-in-hand with the doctors, clients and pets as a veterinary assistant is her passion.
She graduated from high school in 2008 and has continued to pursue her dream of working with and helping animals in need. She has been living on her own for several years now and is the single mother of her beautiful daughter and son, loving every moment she can spend with her children and striving to be great role model.
Coming to us from another veterinary hospital, we were happy to welcome Jill to North Cascade Veterinary Hospital in 2005. With plenty of experience, she fits right in and lifts up the place with her positive attitude, loving kindness, and great sense of humor!
In 2007, she and her husband decided it was time to grow their family, so she put her post on hold here and focused on home. Six years later (in 2013) she rejoined the NCVH team; picking up right where she left off!
Her husband and her 2 beautiful boys keep her very busy, but that's not all! She also braves 3 yellow labs (seen in the photo), 2 cats and 4 chickens. All of her pets have beginning to show their age and slowing down a bit - excluding 'Austin', he's rediculous (but they love him)!
Jill loves to hike and has participated in the "Trek for Treasure" 3 years in a row now! She also enjoys reading a good mystery novel, listening to music and having random singing and dancing parties with her 2 sons (especially in the car)!
Raquel kicked off her start here at North Cascade Veterinary Hospital as a part of the kennel staff in January 2013. Soon thereafter, when an assistant position became available, she was the first in line and has been working with the doctors ever since. Raquel is a 2015 college graduate with an associate’s degree. She enjoys spending time goofing around with her adorable son, 1 dog and 3 cats.
Ashley began her post at North Cascade Veterinary Hospital in April 2014. She started as our opening shift kennel assistant, maintaining care for our boarding animals and facility while simultaneously fulfilling the duties as Mel (our head technician's) right-hand lady! Juggling a full-time position here, while also being in high-demand as our #1 groomer, Ashley made herself a hot commodity around NCVH very quickly!
With her talents, training and education ever-climbing, Ashley found herself as a veterinary assistant in late 2016 and has held that post since, cross-training under each one of our veterinarians.
She attended school and graduated with training and certification as a veterinary assistant in 2003 as well as dog training in 2010. She lives with her husband, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 parrots. She's also exhibiting her ambition and skill as she begins growing her farm of rabbits, goats and chickens. In her free time, Ashley enjoys hiking and farming and relaxing with her pets.
